What Pond Ecosystem Balance Really Means

A balanced pond is not one without algae, insects, leaves, or change. Nature does not work that way. It is a pond where nutrient inputs and biological processes are in a workable relationship. Fish and decomposing organic matter create waste. Beneficial bacteria convert that waste into forms plants can use. Plants compete for nutrients, shade portions of the water, and provide habitat. Fall maintenance is largely about preventing leaves from becoming sludge. Netting can be helpful beneath heavily shedding trees, though it should be installed and removed carefully so it does not detract from the pond’s natural beauty. Winter maintenance is lighter in the Bay Area, but pumps, circulation, and fish behavior should still be monitored.
