For most residential fountains, regular attention is simple and far less expensive than waiting for a pump to fail. The right routine also keeps water clearer, reduces strain on electrical components, and helps you spot a developing issue before it interrupts the flow.

Start With the Water Level

A submersible fountain pump depends on water for more than appearance. The surrounding water helps cool the motor and allows the pump to operate as designed. When a basin runs low, the pump may pull in air, surge, become noisy, or overheat. Repeated dry running can shorten its life considerably.

Check the water level at least once a week during warm, dry, or windy weather.
