Large-Scale Recreation Pond Built on a Hillside in Salinas, California
At Aquascape Creations, we specialize in building custom water features that feel like they belong in nature. One of our recent projects in Salinas, California was a true example of what happens when vision, planning, equipment, and artistry all come together.
This was not a small backyard pond. This was a large-scale recreation pond built on top of a hill, surrounded by beautiful views and designed to look like it had always been part of the property.
For this project, we brought in and installed over 300 tons of boulders and stone. Some of the massive boulders used in the project weighed more than 7 tons each, requiring heavy equipment, careful planning, and experienced placement. Every boulder had to be selected, moved, and set in a way that looked natural, but also served a purpose in the structure and beauty of the pond.
A Recreation Pond Designed to Feel Natural
The goal was to create a pond that was more than just a water feature. This project was designed as a recreation pond, a place where the family could enjoy the sound of water, the beauty of natural stone, and the feeling of having a private lake on their property.
Large recreation ponds require a different level of planning compared to standard koi ponds or small waterfalls. The scale, water movement, filtration, rock placement, access, elevation, and long-term function all have to be considered before construction begins.
On this Salinas project, the hillside location made the work even more challenging. Building a water feature on top of a hill means every detail matters, from bringing materials in, to moving soil, to setting boulders safely and creating a natural layout that works with the land instead of fighting against it.

Over 300 Tons of Boulder and Stone Work
One of the biggest parts of this project was the amount of natural stone used. With over 300 tons of boulders and rock, this recreation pond became a major construction project.
Some of the boulders were so large that they weighed over 7 tons each. These are not stones that can be moved by hand or adjusted easily once placed. Each one required the right machine, the right operator, and the right eye for natural placement.
At Aquascape Creations, we believe boulder placement is where construction becomes art. A large rock can look powerful, but if it is placed wrong, it will look forced. Our goal is always to make the pond look like nature created it first, and we were only there to reveal it.
Built for Large-Scale Water Feature Construction
This project in Salinas is a great example of the type of work Aquascape Creations is known for. We do not only build small garden ponds. We also build:
- Large recreation ponds
- Natural swimming ponds
- Large koi ponds
- Pondless waterfalls
- Hillside waterfalls
- Large boulder water features
- Wetland filtration systems
- Natural ecosystem ponds
- Custom water features for estates and large properties
Large-scale pond construction requires more than basic landscaping. It takes knowledge of water movement, filtration, excavation, rock setting, safety, elevations, and long-term maintenance.
This is the type of work our team is built for.
A Pond on Top of the Hill
The location of this Salinas recreation pond made the project extra special. Being on top of the hill gave the pond a completely different feeling. It was not just something added to the property. It became a destination.
When you are standing near the water, surrounded by massive stone and natural movement, it feels peaceful and powerful at the same time. That is what we try to create with every project: a space where people want to stay, sit, listen, and enjoy.
Why Boulder Selection Matters
In a large pond, the stone is not only decoration. Boulders help create the shape, shoreline, waterfalls, edges, depth changes, and natural character of the pond.
For this project, we used a mix of massive boulders and smaller stone to create a more natural look. In nature, you do not see every rock the same size. You see large anchor stones, medium stones, smaller cobble, and gravel working together.
That is the same approach we use in our recreation ponds. The pond needs to look like it was carved into the land, not like stone was simply stacked around a hole.

This Salinas project is one we are very proud of because it represents the kind of large-scale work we love to build. It required a lot of planning, a lot of stone, heavy equipment, and a team that understands how to work with nature at a larger scale.
We are grateful to have been trusted with this project and excited to see how this recreation pond continues to mature over time as the water, stone, plants, and surrounding landscape all come together.
