The Disadvantages of an Aquascape Pond — Our Honest Take from Years of Building Them

Small waterfall flowing over rocks in garden pond.

At Aquascape Creations, we’ve built and maintained countless ponds across the Bay Area. We’ve seen the beauty and the challenges that come with owning a living ecosystem in your backyard. While Aquascape ponds are designed to mimic nature, just like in nature, things don’t always stay perfectly balanced.

This post isn’t meant to discourage you from owning a pond — it’s about transparency. Here’s our professional take on the real disadvantages of an Aquascape pond, based on experience in the field.

1. It’s a Living System — Which Means It Changes Over Time

An Aquascape pond is a biological ecosystem, not a static water feature. Over time, it will develop minor issues — just like any system with moving parts and living organisms.

Your pond will go through stages of balance and imbalance, especially in its first year as beneficial bacteria establish themselves. Algae spikes are common, particularly during the hot summer months or after heavy debris enters the system.

These fluctuations are normal, but they do require patience and understanding of how your ecosystem works.

2. Maintenance Is Part of the Deal

A natural pond doesn’t maintain itself entirely — and neither does an Aquascape pond.
A yearly deep cleaning is essential to remove accumulated debris, refresh the water quality, and reset the ecosystem balance.

This adds to the cost of ownership, but skipping it will lead to cloudy water, excess algae, or equipment strain. Most pond owners who maintain their systems properly only need 20–30 minutes of light maintenance per week, while others prefer to hire a pond service (like ours) for seasonal care.

3. Energy Costs in California Are Real

Because your pond relies on constant water circulation to filter properly and provide oxygen for fish, your pump must run 24/7.

In California, where electricity rates are high, this can add a noticeable cost. That’s why we often recommend high-efficiency pumps for continuous operation, paired with more powerful on-demand pumps to enhance waterfalls when desired.

4. Predators Are a Natural Risk

If you have koi, you’re also feeding the local ecosystem. Herons, raccoons, minks, and other predators can pose a threat.

To reduce this risk, we build deep fish caves and hiding zones, giving your koi safe areas to retreat. Motion sensors, decoys, and netting can also help — but predators will always be part of the natural equation.

5. Leaks and Liner Damage Can Happen

Leaks are one of the most common issues we encounter in older ponds. Sometimes it’s a simple fix — a loose connection in the stream or skimmer area — but in other cases, it could mean a chewed liner or a deep puncture.

Rodents and gophers are particularly problematic in our region. When they burrow under the pond and bite through the liner, the repair can get costly. Using concrete cloth or other reinforcement materials during construction can drastically reduce this risk.

6. Not Everyone Enjoys the Same Maintenance Level

For some homeowners, pond care is relaxing — a few minutes spent feeding fish or cleaning the skimmer becomes part of their weekend morning routine.
For others, any maintenance feels like too much.

That’s why we always have an open conversation before starting a project. Some clients realize they would enjoy a pondless waterfall more — the sound and movement of water, without the fish and maintenance.

Our Perspective as Pond Builders

Despite all these challenges, nearly 100% of our clients tell us the same thing:

“Even with the maintenance, it’s the best thing we ever added to our home.”

The peace, movement, and life that water brings to a space outweigh the downsides — as long as you go into it informed and prepared.

At Aquascape Creations, we don’t shy away from talking about the disadvantages. In fact, we prefer being honest upfront. If we believe a pond will bring more headaches than joy for your lifestyle or property, we’ll recommend against building it.

Thinking About a Pond?

If you’re considering a pond or water feature in the Bay Area, reach out to us for a consultation. We’ll assess your property, discuss your goals, and recommend whether an Aquascape pond, recreation pond, or pondless waterfall is the right fit.

Let us help you create a water feature that brings lasting enjoyment — not frustration.

Common Questions About Aquascape Ponds

Q: Are Aquascape ponds high maintenance?

Not necessarily — but they do require regular care. Think of it like owning a garden or a pet. Light weekly maintenance (like emptying the skimmer basket or trimming plants) and one major cleaning each year keep it healthy and clear.

Q: How much does a pond increase my electric bill?

It depends on the size of your pond and pump setup. A typical energy-efficient pond pump in California might add $20–$40 per month. Using variable-speed pumps or adding timer controls can lower that even more.

Q: What can I do about algae growth?

Algae is part of every living pond. You can manage it by maintaining proper filtration, using beneficial bacteria, adding aquatic plants to shade the water, and avoiding overfeeding fish. A balanced ecosystem will naturally keep algae under control.

Q: Can I prevent leaks completely?

While no system is completely leak-proof, the right construction methods go a long way. We use reinforced liners, proper underlayment, and techniques like rodent barriers or concrete cloth to minimize risk.

Q: Are predators a big problem for koi ponds?

They can be if the pond isn’t designed with protection in mind. We incorporate fish caves, rock shelves, and motion-activated deterrents during construction to make your pond much safer for koi.

Q: What if I want the sound of water without fish or maintenance?

That’s where pondless waterfalls or fountain features come in. They offer the same sound and visual movement, without biological filtration or fish care.
