How Often Should You Clean Your Pond in the Bay Area?

The Real Maintenance Routine for an Aquascape-Style Ecosystem Pond

At Aquascape Creations, we often hear:

“Do I really need to drain and clean my pond every year?”

That’s one of the most common misconceptions about ecosystem ponds. Let’s set the record straight.

We design and maintain Aquascape-style ecosystem ponds across the Bay Area — Livermore, Danville, San Ramon, Pleasanton, and Walnut Creek — and these systems are built to balance themselves naturally. When done right, they need far less work than traditional koi ponds with pressurized filters and external equipment.

Weekly Maintenance: Quick and Simple

Our mild Bay Area climate means less leaf fall and debris than other regions. That keeps your weekly maintenance short and easy.

  • Clean your skimmer basket once a week (twice during fall if trees are nearby).
Open the lid, remove the basket, empty it, and rinse the prefilter pad.
    Time required: about 5–10 minutes.

  • Add beneficial bacteria weekly.
Just a few pumps or scoops maintain clear, healthy water by supporting the pond’s natural filtration.

  • Trim Plants and split
This is on the needed basis but if done weekly it will feel a much smaller task.

No draining, no backwashing — just light touch-ups that keep your pond running perfectly.

 Seasonal Care: Twice a Year

Every six months, give your pond a little tune-up:

  • Rinse the BioFalls filter (especially if you feed your fish daily).

  • Trim and shape aquatic plants.

  • Inspect liner edges and check for root intrusion.

These steps typically take 20–30 minutes for most ponds.

 Annual Cleanout: Refresh, Don’t Reset

A yearly cleanout is still recommended — but we never “strip” the pond.
We save about half the water, gently rinse the pond, and remove the debris that’s settled on the bottom (old food, leaf buildup, fish waste).

The goal isn’t to make the pond spotless — it’s to protect your biofilm, the thin living layer that coats rocks and gravel. This natural film is packed with beneficial bacteria that break down waste and keep your pond balanced.

During your annual cleanout, we also:

  • Clean light lenses and replace bulbs if needed

  • Trim or split overgrown lilies

  • Add slow-release fertilizer tablets

  • Check all fittings, pumps, and underwater connections

For ponds with a wetland filter, we submerge a sump pump and backflush the top layer to remove trapped sediment — a process typically done once per year.

The Truth About “High Maintenance” Myths

Some contractors claim Aquascape-style ponds are “high maintenance” because of the yearly cleanout. What they forget to mention is that formal koi ponds with external pressure filters need weekly attention:

  • Backwashing filters

  • Performing water changes

  • Cleaning pump baskets

  • Adjusting valves

Those systems can be great for collectors who enjoy hands-on pond management — but they require twice as much weekly time and have equipment that’s harder to hide.

An Aquascape ecosystem pond is the opposite: it looks natural, blends with the landscape, and becomes a living habitat that attracts birds, dragonflies, and frogs — while staying low-maintenance.

Which System Is Right for You?

Every pond has its personality — and so do its owners.
If you enjoy mechanical equipment and prefer a clean, bare look, a formal koi pond might suit you.

But if you want a natural-looking pond that maintains itself through biology, an Aquascape-style ecosystem is your best investment.

When it’s time for your seasonal service or annual refresh, working with an experienced team like Aquascape Creations in Livermore ensures the job’s done efficiently and your ecosystem stays thriving.
