“How many koi can I keep?”
It’s a great question — and one that matters more than most people realize. Overstocking is one of the most common causes of poor water quality, fish stress, and long-term maintenance headaches.
Let’s walk through what really determines how many koi your pond can support.
It’s Not Just About Gallons
A common rule of thumb you’ll hear is 1 koi per 250 gallons of water.
While this can work as a starting point, it’s oversimplified.
You also need to consider:

Surface area (oxygen exchange happens at the top)

Filtration capacity (how well your system handles waste)

Fish size (a 4-inch koi and a 20-inch koi have very different needs)

Feeding habits and bio-load (more koi = more waste = more maintenance)

🔧 Tip: If your pond is heavily planted and well filtered (wetland filter, bog, or mechanical + bio), you can stretch these numbers a bit — but it’s always better to understock than overstock.
Things to Keep in Mind

Koi grow fast. That 6″ koi might reach 18″–24″ in just a couple of years.

Each fish adds to your maintenance. More koi = more feeding, more waste, more filter cleaning.

Koi are social but not crowded fish. They thrive in groups but need space to move comfortably.
