How to Control String Algae Without Disrupting Your Pond’s Natural Balance

If you’ve noticed green, hair-like strands clinging to your pond’s rocks or drifting near your waterfall, you’re likely dealing with string algae. It’s one of the most common issues for backyard ponds in Livermore and the East Bay — and also one of the most misunderstood.

At Aquascape Creations, we design and maintain natural water features throughout the Tri-Valley, and we’ve seen how quickly algae can go from harmless to out of control if not managed properly.

What Is String Algae, and Why Does It Show Up in the Bay Area?

String algae (filamentous algae) is a natural organism that thrives in ponds exposed to sunlight and organic nutrients. It often shows up in spring, especially in Northern California’s warmer inland climate, as biological filters slowly reactivate after winter.

In moderation, it’s a sign your pond is alive — absorbing excess nutrients, adding a touch of oxygen, and creating habitat for microorganisms.

But when the balance shifts, string algae can:

  • Smother aquatic plants and gravel beds

  • Reduce oxygen levels, especially overnight

  • Clog pumps and waterfall weirs

  • Make your pond look neglected

How We Control Algae in the Bay Are Ponds (Without Chemicals)

1. Manual Removal

We start by physically pulling out thick algae mats — especially in waterfalls and streams. This instantly reduces nutrients and improves flow.

2. Beneficial Bacteria

In natural ponds and swim ponds, we use a blend of cold and warm water bacteria to outcompete algae by breaking down fish waste, leaf matter, and other organics. Weekly dosing is key during the warmer months.

3. Targeted Algae Treatments

In stubborn areas, we spot-treat with EcoBlast Granular Algaecide, which is safe for fish and plants when used correctly. We never treat the entire pond — this avoids oxygen crashes and ecosystem shock.

4. IonGen Copper Ionization

We recommend the IonGen System G2 for clients who want a low-maintenance, consistent solution. It uses low-voltage copper to suppress algae growth in hard-to-reach areas without affecting water clarity or safety.

Strengthen the Pond Ecosystem to Prevent Future Outbreaks

Ponds are like living gardens. In early stages, string algae acts like a weed — it fills space until stronger elements (plants, fish, bacteria) take over.

Here’s how we help our Livermore, Pleasanton, and Danville clients get ahead of algae long-term:

  • Densely plant the pond: Water lilies, floaters, and marginals shade the water and reduce nutrients.

  • Encourage koi and goldfish to graze: These fish love nibbling algae — let them work for you.

  • Use a gravel bottom: We install ¼”–½” gravel beds to support microbial colonies and prevent algae buildup on bare liner.

Seasonal Notes for the Tri-Valley Region

In early spring, before aquatic plants take off and filters stabilize, algae often spikes. This is typical for ponds across Livermore, San Ramon, and the East Bay hills. With patience, proper maintenance, and biological support, algae will drop off naturally.

Caution: Chemical Overuse Can Backfire

We strongly discourage routine chemical treatments. Over time, they disrupt beneficial bacteria and create dependency. When used, always remove the dead algae immediately to prevent oxygen depletion.

Final Takeaway: Healthy Ponds Allow Some Algae

A perfect pond isn’t crystal clear — it’s balanced.
If string algae is taking over, it’s not time to panic, but it is time to act. With the right tools and biological support, we can help your pond function the way nature intended — clean, clear, and low-maintenance.

Schedule a Pond Health Check

If you’re dealing with recurring algae issues or a water feature that doesn’t feel “right,” we offer on-site consultations and seasonal cleanouts.
